Homemade Dumplings for Chicken and Dumplings: A Comforting Classic

Chicken and dumplings are a beloved comfort food that warms the heart and soul after eating it, while store bought dumplings can be convenient and good in taste, but if we talk about a homemade dumpling made from scratches gives another level of taste satisfaction.
Here's a step by step guide to make a delicious homemade chicken and dumplings:


Ingredients for Dumplings

  • 2 Cups of all purpose flour

  • 4 tablespoon baking soda

  • 1/4 cup shortening (or butter)

  • 3/4 warm water or milk

  • 1 teaspoon salt


Ingredients for Chicken and Broth Preparation

  • 1 pound boneless and skinless chicken breast or thighs

  • 4 cups chicken broth

  • 1 onion diced

  • 2 cloves garlic

  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme

  • Salt and pepper, according to taste


Instruction for Preparation of Dumplings and Chicken

Prepare the Chicken and Broth First

  • First of all take a large pot, saute the diced onions and minced garlic until it gets soften.

  • Then add chicken, chicken broth then stir a little and then put thyme, pepper and salt according to your taste.

  • Bring to a boil, lower the flame and cook it until the chicken is finely cooked.


Make the Dumplings

Prepare the Dumpling Batter:

  • In a large mixing bowl, take the flour, baking soda and salt in the given quantity, whisk together all of them.

  • Add the melted butter and warm milk or water in the dried ingredients, stir it until you get a finely mixed batter, the batter should be thick and slightly lumpy.

  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it gently until it is smooth and pliable.


Roll Out the Dumplings

  • Divide the dough in half and roll out each half into a thin sheet, about 1/4 inch thick.

  • Cut that thin sheet into strips and squares, about 2–3 inches in size.


Cook the Dumplings

  • When the chicken is cooked, take it out and shred or chop it into bite sizes and then again put chicken into the pot.

  • Bring the broth to a rolling boil and then gently add the dumplings to the pot.

  • Cook the dumplings for almost 10–15 minutes or until they are cooked through and fluffy.


Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve the chicken and dumplings hot, garnish it with some sprinkles of paprika and chopped fresh herbs.
